Military personal spend a lot of their time outdoors in the freezing cold. That is why the US Military designed these ECW (Extended Cold Weather) thermal tops to help their soldiers snug and warm.

Due to safety requirements, artificial materials are not allowed in conjunction with the Nomex CVC uniforms. In flash fire situations, synthetic materials will melt to the body, and, if anything, will exacerbate the situation. Natural materials (cotton and wool) like the ones in this thermal will not melt to the body.
