This pocket square features a depiction inspired by the quarries of Bibémus, situated to the east of Aix-en-Provence. Abandoned yet enchantingly overgrown, these quarries became a muse for Cézanne, perfectly aligning with his penchant for geometrising landscapes. The rugged terrain, adorned with intense hues, served as a canvas for his artistic vision. With delicate glazing brush strokes in soft pastel tones, Cézanne masterfully captured the essence of the massive vertical cliff walls, imparting an airy and luminous quality to the composition. He skilfully juxtaposed shades, contrasting the shadowed areas with the vibrant oranges of the cliffs against a backdrop of purple-blue skies, while the horizon blurred into the distant treetops. Between 1895 and 1899, Cézanne delved into the nuances of this remote and desolate landscape, exploring its geographic and tonal variations.
