This is an antique Watcombe pottery owl jug that is glazed in a striking green iridescent metallic lustre finish. The underside is unmarked, but this is a known Watcombe Pottery design. The vase measures 5 1/4 in height with the top opening measuring 4 3/8 wide and the jug having a depth of 5 1/2 from the tip of the spout to the back of handle - it is fairly heavy for its size, weighing a little over 1 lb. It is in very good condition - there are a couple of tiny glaze flakes on the top rim, very minor (see last close-up photo). Otherwise, no chips, cracks or pronounced wear.
The lighting emphasizes the oil slick appearance of the glaze in my photos, but this is still perceptible even under normal viewing. Watcombe used lustre glazes from the later 19th century into the 1920s, but I believe that this is a 19th century piece, although I cant be sure.
This is a wonderful display piece - fabulous glaze and form, great addition to a Watcombe collection!
