A labour of love. Our sister and favourite visual artist Rajni Perera came to visit our India studio years ago and painted this beauty. It took us a meditative pandemic year to create the iconic tapestry of our dreams. Hand embroidered in a spectrum of techniques by Mustak Bhai, the real embroidery legend.

Rajni Perera was born in Sri Lanka and lives and works in Toronto. She explores issues of hybridity, futurity, ancestorship, immigration identity/cultures, monsters and dream worlds. All of these themes marry in a newly objectified realm of mythical symbioses. In her work she seeks to open and reveal the dynamism of the icons and objects she creates, both scripturally existent, self-invented and externally defined. She creates a subversive aesthetic that counteracts antiquated, oppressive discourse, and acts as a restorative force through which people can move outdated, repressive modes of being towards reclaiming their power.

Mustak bhai from Hawra, Bengal started developing his embroidery craft with his mother since he was in the 6th grade. After graduating school he got into his practice full time, starting with Zardozi and then moving into more complex Aari needlework that requires more steady hand control and practice.

He is a self taught artist and has mastered both types of embroidery apparatus along with khaka creation which makes him a rare one man show.In this tapestry these are few of the majorly highlighted embroidery techniques used:

Zari embroidery with hand twisted dori of 12 strands
Tufting done by hand with Aari needlework
Dabka on jaali-work style with fine-coiled copper wire
Mukesh work and Bead-work embroidery in jaali-work style.
