The design features the Psychological Operations branch insignia — a chess knight on top of two crossed swords with lightning bolts. The chess knight symbolizes the strategic nature of PSYOPS and the unique ability of PSYOPS personnel to "attack obliquely" as a knight attacks in a game of chess. The swords with lightning bolt blades represent the ability of PSYOPS personnel to attack anywhere with speed. The Army codified the current PYSOP insignia in 1998.

Originally founded during World War I, the PYSOP branch has played a critical role in devastating the morale of enemy troops during World War II, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The branch's motto is "persuade, change, influence," and its home station is Fort Bragg, NC.
