Our Ruby, Green and Blue Madder Silk Pocket Square is made from the finest quality Madder silk. Madder silk derives its name from a plant: Rubia tinctorum (also called common Madder) from which natural dyes can be extracted. While the natural madder root produced primarily red dyes, the modern dyeing process for madder can produce a wide array of rich, saturated hues. Most of these colours are on the darker end of the spectrum; for example colours like mustard, forest green, burnt orange, deep blue and violet, and of course, gold, navy and burgundy.
Madder silk accessories are quintessentially British and exhibit a different handle to normal silk. These pocket squares are screen-printed using a process dating back hundreds of years on a twill silk fabric that has been treated with gum arabic, leading to a distinctive finish and feel; this is referred by those in the industry as a chalk hand. We have selected these designs from the archives, reflecting the rich traditions of classic hand-printed accessories.
