SLAM #22 Cover- Skip To My Lou

It was the 1997 December issue of SLAM Magazine, the 22nd issue ever, and it was time for their '97-98 College Basketball Preview.  For the cover SLAM chose a little known (this was pre internet/social media) point guard from Fresno State.  The headline read "Fresno State's Rafer Alston: The Best Point Guard in the World (you've never head of)".  

Rafer was known as "Skip to My Lou" gaining fame around the NYC playground scene which also was home to SLAM.  Not known for putting college basketball players on their covers, Editor in Chief Tony Gervino took a chance on Skip after first seeing him at a basketball camp in Jersey a couple years prior.

Gervino wrote this in the front of the magazine in a section called The Sixth Man.  "By the way, please tell your friends to buy this magazine.  My boss, who thinks I'm nuts for putting Rafer on the cover in the first place, has threatened to fire me if the issue bombs.  I only think he was kidding." 

The rest is history.
