Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, 1696-1770 The Battle of Vercellae, c.1725-29
The Battle of Vercellae was fought in July 101 BCE in modern day northern Italy. The battle saw the Germanic-Celtic alliance defeated by the Roman army, and marked the end of the Germanic threat to the Roman Republic. The motion of battle is portrayed by a swirling mass of characters, animals and weapons, with Gaius Marius, the Roman proconsul, at the centre of the action on the white horse.
