The Luckenbooth Brooch

by greatscotscotland.com

$ 22.00

  • Product Description

From the 17th century, the Luckenbooth was known as one of the most romantic Scottish symbols of love. It was often given as a token of betrothal, affection and friendship.

From the 18th century onwards, small heart-shaped brooches were worn to protect against evil spirits or for diverting the attention of the sithean (fairy spirits).

Luckenbooth brooches are a distinctly Scottish type of jewellery, named after the lockable jewellery booths that once lined the High Street (the Royal Mile) near the High Kirk of St Giles in Edinburgh.

Victorian Luckenbooths were generally set with garnets. Garnets were thought to have a lucky influence on affairs of the heart and symbolized a lover’s constancy as well as being an emblem of deep friendship. The Victorian versions of the Luckenbooth brooch were decorated with gems of different colours.

These tasteful and emotive brooches feature a vibrant imitation gemstone of your choice. They beautifully compliment our Poncho's or Stoles and arrived gift-boxed and ready to give.
