WILMA'S STORY
Wilma Rudolph overcame incredible challenges to become one of the greatest athletes ever. She had many childhood illnesses, including a bout with polio that left her paralyzed. A doctor told her she would never walk again, but her mother insisted she would. After years of wearing a leg brace and receiving therapeutic massages from her devoted family, Wilma regained the ability to walk. She became an excellent basketball player and was encouraged to take up track and field. She went on to medal in two Olympic Games, winning three golds in the 1960 Olympics, which launched her into the spotlight. At the height of her career, she retired from track and field and became an educator. She was also an activist, fighting for integration and equality. A hero on and off the track.
