This is a striking vintage smoking jacket with a woven abstract pattern in black and red against a maroon background. It has a matching shawl collar and has a jetted pocket at the left chest and at either side. The shoulders are padded in typical 40s fashion. It closes at the waist with two buttons covered in matching fabric. The jacket is fully lined in red satin fabric.
Age: 1940s, maybe early 1950s
Label: Bonnington Reg’d Tailored by H.V. Cowie Co Limited
Material: Probably rayon acetate - has a two toned sheen to it.
Sizing: Size 44 (large) is indicated, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 19” across seam-to-seam
Sleeves: 26 1/4” long
Sleeve Inseam: 18” long
Chest: 47”, taken under the arms and depending on overlap
Waist: 44” around, but meant to be cinched
Overall length: 31 1/2“, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition except for a bit of moisture staining to the lining at the upper left back (see last close-up photo). It is a little wrinkled in the photos, but a professional dry cleaner should be able to press this properly (do not apply a hot iron to this fabric ever!) - make sure that you use a good dry cleaner and they should be able to eliminate the moisture stains as well. Otherwise, this smoking jacket presents itself very well.
This is a great example of a vintage smoking jacket hard to find in this large size - with a proper pressing this will look fabulous!
