This is a wonderful 1960s mod Mary Quant coat made in England under the Ginger Group label (for more info on Mary Quant and the Ginger Group, read further below).  This Mary Quant coat has a high banded neckline that closes with a button.  It has slightly padded shoulders with raglan sleeves and is cut with a flare down to the hemline, like a swing jacket.  It closes down the front with a brass zipper with ring pull.  There is a circular opening pocket at either side.  This Mary Quant coat is fully lined in complimentary coloured acetate fabric that is interlined for extra protection against wind.

Mary Quant, of course, is a legendary London based designer, credited, along with Andre Courreges, with the invention of the mini-skirt.  She launched her boutique “Bazaar” on the King’s Road in 1955, and her name eventually became synonymous with the Swinging Sixties and mod design.  She founded the Ginger Group in 1963 as a manufacturing and merchandising company for her ready-to-wear line.

Fabric label:  Certification Trade Mark Applied For with the Woolmark logo / Pure New Wool.  The Woolmark logo was first issued in 1964 and the presence of “Certification Trade Mark Applied For” would appear to be early in its history, so this Mary Quant coat probably dates to 1964-1965. 

Sizing: No size is indicated - this Mary Quant coat should fit a medium size, but please rely on the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders: 16” estimated, due to the raglan cut of the sleeve

Sleeves: 22” from the estimated shoulder, 30” from the mid-neck seam to the cuff edge 

Sleeve Inseam: 15 1/2” 

Bust: 42” 

Waist: 51” 

Hemline:  84” around

Length: 34"

Condition:  This Mary Quant coat is in very good condition with no wear, tear, stains or odour.  There are a few tiny surface nibbles to the lower front, but these are really minor. 

This Mary Quant coat is a wonderful example of 60s mod design.....striking colour...great addition to a fashion collection!
