Label: A Hardy Amies Design Tailored by Hepworths Pure New Wool.  Hardy Amies (1909-2003), of course, is a legendary British designer.  He started designing in 1937, but was recruited into British Intelligence during WWII.  After WWII, he established his business on Savile Row producing bespoke suits.  In 1959, he became one of the first European designers to produce ready-to-wear by entering into an agreement to design for Hepworths.  He is noted for having designed the wardrobe for Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” and for his long association with Queen Elizabeth II, for whom he designed several gowns for notable occasions from 1950 until his death.  He was knighted in 1989.

Hepworths is a Leeds based clothing manufacturer that was established in 1865.  By 1907, they were the largest producer of clothing in Britain.  They continued to produce under the Hepworths name until 1980, when they ceased manufacturing, but continued to run retail operations under the “Next” banner.
