This is a fabulous vintage 1970s black velvet cape coat featuring the most interesting style.  The material is made of a soft cotton velvet and is fully lined in black satin acetate.  This black velvet cape coat is made with a small round tipped square collar and closes with eight velvet buttons down the front.  The waist is smocked and has an internal elasticized band that makes the garment hug the body, giving it the appearance of being a fitted coat although it is in fact a cape.  The sides are open towards the bottom so that the arms are covered, but the hands emerge, almost like a sleeve, as below that the coat angles in towards the legs.  This black velvet cape is cut full so there is beautifully draping of the velvet, particularly at the back.  There is a vertical pocket built into either side. 

Label: Surrey Classics of Canada.  This maker is highly regarded for the coats that it produced. 

Sizing: There is no size tag on this black velvet cape, and although this should fit a small to medium size depending on preference for looseness, please note the following measurements for fit:

Sleeves:  26 1/2” long from the mid-neck seam to the edge of the side

Bust:  36” around estimated 

Waist:  28” unstretched, stretches out to 34” max

Hips:  Full, about 42” around, but this is supposed to be loose 

Length:  44”, measured flat at the back from the neck seam

Condition:  This black velvet cape is in very good condition with no pronounced marking, wear, tear or stains.  It has been very well cared for over the years. 

This is a  rather unique, and really attractive black velvet cape coat - lovely black velvet, wonderful for the fall!
