This is a vintage 1950s dressing gown / lounging robe made of a fine tweed-like woven wool in tones of grey, maroon and black, which given an overall impression of brown. This dressing gown has shawl lapels, defined cuffs, and patch pockets at either side and at the left chest. It closes with a matching sash belt. It is unlined.
Neck loop: Bonnington Reg’d Tailored by H.V. Cowie Co. Limited - Bonnington was the brand name of the H.V. Cowie Co Limited of Toronto. Cowie was founded in 1922 by Hedley Vicars Cowie and specialized in manufacturing and importing menswear, especially dressing gowns. Bonnington was registered as a brand in 1945. The company declined after H.V. Cowie’s death in 1965 and the plant was sold in 1967, although they continued activity as an importer until dissolution in 2008.
Retailer label: Simpson’s The Store For Men. Simpson’s was a Canadian department store chain. The style of the Simpson’s logo dates the robe to prior to 1958
Sizing: Size M is indicated on this dressing gown and although this should fit a medium size, please rely on the following measurements for fit:
Shoulders: 19” across, between shoulder/sleeve seams
Sleeves: 23” long from the shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeve inseam: 17”
Chest: 48” around, taken under the arms
Waist: 46” around, uncinched, but meant to be cinched with the belt
Hips: 50”
Overall length: 40” measured from the back neck seam to the hemline
Condition: This dressing gown is in very clean condition with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odour.
