Vintage Art Deco Corde Clutch Handbag or Vanity Bag

by poppysvintageclothing.com

  • Product Description

This is a geometric patterned art deco corde clutch (cordé) handbag or vanity bag, woven in tones of grey, tan and brown. This would appear to be an early example of cordé being used for handbags as the cordé technique, as applied to bags, was introduced around 1928 or 1929 and given the angular patterning on this bag, I would say that this art deco corde clutch dates to the late 20s or early 1930s.  The bag has a zippered top and the zipper pull has a twisted wool cord and ball extension pull affixed to it.  It is unclear if this bag was meant to be used as a clutch handbag or simply as a vanity bag as it does lack stiffness or a handle.  The interior is lined in a grey silky faille material with a pocket built onto either side.

Cordé was produced by winding wool or silk around a wire or cord core.  This art deco corde clutch is silky to the touch, so I think that the cordé is silk based, but possibly rayon based.

This art deco corde clutch is in very good condition - a bit of fuzziness to the wool ball pull and a small light makeup mark to the lining, very minor.

This art deco corde clutch measures 9” wide by 6 3/4” high.

Don't miss your chance to own this piece of handbag history - a wonderful addition to a collection!
