  • Product Description

This is an old Glengarry bonnet or cap made by Wm Scully of Montreal.  Wm Scully was a Canadian supplier of military caps, uniforms and badges founded in 1877.  It opened a factory in Montreal in 1908 and remained at 1202 University Street until 1958.  This Glengarry bonnet would have been military and probably belonged to a soldier of the Canadian Black Watch, which was based in Montreal - the name Mackay is on a label affixed to the interior.  Members of the Black Watch traditionally wore the Balmoral bonnet in parades but also used the Glengarry bonnet for certain dress occasions. The Scully label looks quite old, so this probably dates to WWI or perhaps a little later, maybe WW2.  You can see that there had been various badges affixed to it, but these were removed and have left some marks.  Otherwise, the cap is in very good condition, and would look better with a proper cleaning to the grosgrain ribbon.  There is no evidence of there ever having been a red pompom on top.  The hat has a size 7 label on it.  This is a wonderful old Scottish Glengarry bonnet - nice quality dark blue, almost, black, wool!
