Antique Victorian Frock Coat Men Dussault & St Jean Quebec S

  • Product Description

This is an antique men’s Victorian frock coat, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.  The coat still has its original label, which reads “Dussault & St. Jean Sherbrooke, P.Q.”.  I’ve included a photo of an advertisement page from the Mitre, Bishop’s University Literary Journal of 1899-1900 that contains an ad for “Dussalt (sic) & St Jean Merchant Tailors Direct Importers From English, French & German Markets 65 Wellington St Sherbrooke, Que.”.  Other than this, I could find no other information on this tailor.  This frock coat is based on a naval model, with peaked lapels, padded shoulders and a six button front arranged in three pairs.  The back of the frock coat is cut similarly to a tailcoat, but shorter and squared, and with the usual two buttons at the lower back.  The cuffs of the sleeves are decorated with two buttons.  All buttons are covered in black silk.  The interior is lined in a black twill fabric, perhaps silk.

Sizing: This frock coat should fit a small size, perhaps a modern size 34.  Please rely on the following measurements for fit, comparing them to another jacket that you may own or your body measurements, allowing some room for fit:

Shoulders: 17” across seam-to-seam

Sleeves: 22 1/2” long

Sleeve Inseam: 15 3/4” long

Chest: 38” around, taken under the arms

Waist: 36” around

Overall length: 39 1/2“

Condition:  This frock coat is in amazingly clean condition, especially considering its age.  No wear, tear, fraying, repairs, stains or odour - this looks to have seen little to no use and was very well cared for over the last 120 or so years.

This is an exceptional frock coat, rare because the label identifies a Quebec tailor - wonderful if its fits, really a museum piece!
