Ojo Pecoso wixárika gourd. Handmade in Mexico.

Each gourd is cleaned and dried by Mixtec Indigenous artisans in Oaxaca who also prepare the threads of cotton that are hand-dyed with natural dyes. The gourds and the threads then travel to another group of artisans in the state of Nayarit, where wixárika indigenous people apply beeswax all over the gourd plus one thread of cotton at a time. Designs are from the Wixárika culture.

Behind the Hill creates contemporary textiles and decorative objects for the home using a variety of heirloom color-grown cotton which grows wild in natural shades of pink, terracotta, green, beige, and white. The designs rely on nature; rainfall, sunlight, and wind affect the texture and colors of the raw materials, making each product beautifully imperfect and unique.
