Rosa’s Story

Called “the mother of the freedom movement,” Rosa Parks fought to end segregation and advance the rights of Black people. In 1955, when she was working as a seamstress in Montgomery, she refused to give up her bus seat to a white person. She was arrested for civil disobedience, and her brave act of defiance ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for over a year. Ultimately, bus segregation was found to be unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Believing there was always more work to be done, she continued her activism, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and was the first woman to lie in honor at the Capitol.
