This is a wonderful vintage sweater that was hand knitted in the Shetland Isles of Scotland. The label identifies it as “The North Islander” sweater. It is made of pure new Shetland Wool in black with white, grey and red detailing - the wool is of a heavier weight, quite substantial, so should be quite warm. It is made in a pullover style with a crew neckline and raglan style sleeves. I would guess that it dates to the 1970s, perhaps 1960s - the lack of a registered “®” mark next to the Woolmark symbol makes me think that this is an earlier piece. The sweater is made for a large man, but a medium size could wear it as an oversized sweater. Please note the following measurements for fit, keeping in mind that the sweater has some stretch:
Sleeves: 35 1/2” from the mid-neck to the cuff
Sleeve inseam: 25 1/2” long
Chest: 48” around
Bottom: 42” around the bottom band
Length: 29 1/2”, measured flat
The sweater is in very good condition except for a small “notch” to the edge of the left cuff where the wool has unraveled - a competent knitter can easily repair this, but it is quite minor. It has slight piling, but it is clean, and very usable as is.
This is a wonderful sweater - lovely Scottish quality!
