This is a 1950s vintage morning suit, or what some may refer to as a formal cutaway frock coat with striped pants.  This vintage morning suit was custom tailored by Gibb  & Co of Montreal - read more about them further down this page.  The frock coat to this vintage morning suit is made of a very good quality black wool with padded shoulders, a chest pocket, peaked lapels and a single button closure.  There are two buttons at the back and the sleeves have four button split cuffs.  The interior of the frock coat is lined in a black rayon fabric with the sleeves lined in white.  The pants to this vintage morning suit are made in a black and grey striped wool with fine light yellow pinstriping. They have a pleated front with suspender buttons and a metal zipper fly.  

Label: Gibb & Co. Ltd. London 1755 Montreal 1775 1508 Mountain St. Montreal with the original owner’s name written onto it and the date of 27/5/52.  Gibb & Co traces its roots to Benaiah Gibb (1755-1826) who immigrated to Montreal from England in 1774, starting his tailor’s shop “B. Gibb and Co.” in 1755.  It became “Gibb & Co.” in 1870 and other members of the Gibb family continued to run the B. Gibb tailor in London.  It’s interesting to note that Benaiah Gibb Jr., the son of the original Benaiah Gibb, bequeathed artwork and a lot on Sherbrooke St in Montreal for the establishment of the Art Association of Montreal, which is now the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, so the Gibb family played an integral role in the history of Montreal. 

Sizing: No size is indicated on this vintage morning suit as it was made to measure, but this should fit a small to medium size, probably a US size 36-38.  Please note the following measurements for fit:

Shoulders: 18” across from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves:  25” long from the shoulder seam

Sleeve inseam:  16 1/2”, taken under the arms 

Chest:  40” around

Waist:  38”

Overall length: 41", taken at the back, measured flat from the neck seam

Waist:  36” around

Hips:  44”

Length:  42”

Leg inseam:  29”

Condition:  This vintage morning suit is in very good condition with no wear, tear, staining or odour - clean and ready to wear, except that one button is missing from the right cuff, easy to replace.
