The design features the Military Intelligence branch insignia, consisting of three chief elements: a dagger pointing up, a heraldic rose, and a heraldic sun. The sun features 8 alternating rays which symbolize Helios, the god of the sun who could see and hear everything beneath him. The 4 straight rays stand for the primary directions on the compass rose, symbolizing the worldwide mission undertaken by the MI branch. Although military intelligence operations have been in use since the Revolutionary War, the Army didn't formalize the branch until 1885 when it established the "Military Intelligence Division."

The Military Intelligence motto is "Always out Front," and its home station is Fort Belvoir, VA.
