Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), View of the High Street, Oxford, 1809–10
Acknowledged as one of the greatest landscape artists of all time, J. M. W. Turner knew Oxford well. From childhood, he made numerous drawings of the streets and colleges, and of the picturesque views surrounding the city.
When, in the 1830s, Turner was choosing views of the city for his greatest series of watercolours, he rejected this perspective featured in View of the High Street, Oxford. He felt that in this painting he had achieved an unparalleled view of technical mastery that he could not repeat.
