Howard Pyle, Pirates Approach a Treasure Ship, 1905
Wear this with our Light Grey Superfine Wool Jacket and Navy Shantung Silk Tie.
Pyle’s painting depicts the perils of piracy in the waters surrounding the Spanish colonial ports of Central and South America during the 17th century. Ships carrying the riches of the “New World” to the Spanish crown were frequently attacked by pirates who would later divide the loot amongst themselves. In this scene, a massive galleon is at the mercy of a small, lethal pirate raft. The attack, signalled by gunfire and billowing smoke, overcomes the galleon’s crew. Amidst the ruthless action, a majestic icon remains unscathed, looking down upon the scene.
