Originally constituted as the 82nd Division in 1917, the 82nd was comprised of soldiers from all 48 states, inspiring the unit’s commanding general, MG Eben Swift, to nickname the division “All-American.” Although the 82nd distinguished itself in some of World War I’s most significant battles, it truly made its mark in World War II, during which the Division earned the coveted “Airborne” designation. Its Airborne paratroopers participated in some of the war's most critical missions, including operations in Sicily and Italy, the Invasion of Normandy, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge.

In the Korean War, the division's paratroopers continued to demonstrate their valor, participating in some of the conflict's fiercest battles. The division's soldiers fought with incredible bravery, often operating behind enemy lines and securing critical locations.

The division's contributions to the Vietnam War were equally significant, with its soldiers serving in a wide range of roles from combat to intelligence gathering. The division's soldiers were responsible for some of the war's most critical missions, including reconnaissance and raids behind enemy lines.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the division continued to serve as a vital component of the US military, spearheading significant operations in Grenada and Panama. 

After the 9/11 attacks, the division once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the nation, playing a critical role in both Afghanistan and Iraq and serving in a wide range of roles from combat to intelligence gathering.

Today, the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division stands ready to “respond to crisis contengencies anywhere in the world within 18 hours” as the Army’s most strategically mobile division. It remains one of the most respected and elite units in the US military, and its paratroopers represent the best of the nation.
