Mark Gottfried's Alabama Crimson Tide began the 2001-2002 season ranked just inside the Top 25. It didn't take long for them to climb the ranks after going 24-6 during the regular season, peaking at #5 in the polls and winning the SEC Regular Season Championship.
After a run to the SEC Tournament Championship game the Crimson Tide earned the #2 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament where they beat #15 seed Florida Atlantic before losing to #10 seed Kent State in the 2nd round.
