This is a 1960s vintage men’s overcoat or topcoat made by Pierre Cardin Paris and sold at the Seymour clothing store located at 12 Boulevard des Capucines, Paris. The coat has high set notched lapels, a three button front hidden by an overflap, padded shoulders with inset sleeves, three button cuffs, a flapped pocket at either side and a 17” centre kick vent at the back. The coat is lined in a blue coloured satin rayon fabric.
Label: Pierre Cardin Paris. The Pierre Cardin signature is embroidered in yellow on the interior left side pocket, above the retailer’s label. The coat dates to a time when the Cardin name had great cachet. During the 70s and 80s the Cardin name was over licensed, making the Cardin brand less desirable, but during the 60s Cardin was considered at the forefront of Parisian fashion design.
Retailer label: Seymour 12 Bd des Capucines Paris. The Boulevard des Capucines is one of the four major boulevards in Paris, with a number of historical and important addresses. Number 12 was the address for the Grand Hotel and now houses Cartier, the famous Parisian jeweller.
Fabric: Wool gabardine with good weight and fall
Colour: Navy blue
Origin: With the Cardin label and the Parisian retailer, this was most certainly made in France
Sizing: The coat has no size label and although the coat should fit a size medium to large, probably a size 40 to 42, please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the style of the coat and the thickness of the fabric into account as well as whether you may want to wear a suit jacket underneath:
Shoulders: 19” across, from one shoulder/sleeve seam to the other shoulder/sleeve seam
Sleeves: 25 1/2” from the shoulder seam
Sleeve Inseam: 17 1/2”
Chest: 46” around
Waist: 44” around
Length: 40”, measured flat
Condition: It is in very good condition with the exception of a detached lining seam around the right inside armpit and the label at the neck is detached on one side and has a small tear in it - both are easy for a seamstress or tailor to repair at a very reasonable price. Otherwise, there is no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odours - this coat looks to have been well cared for and stored over the years.
Excellent French quality and styling - this coat was made during Cardin’s best years, wonderful coat!
