This is a very nice quality English bowler hat made by Moores London for Dupuis Freres, a Montreal department store. A bowler hat is called a derby in the United States, but basically they are the same type of hat. The hat is made in a classic bowler hat / derby form with turned rim lined in grosgrain. The crown has a black grosgrain ribbon around it base. It is lined in gold beige coloured satin that is printed in brown and red with “Moores J Moores & Sons Ltd Factory Denton London Paris New York Fait en Angleterre spécialement pour Dupuis Freres Montreal”. The sweatband is gold stamped “Moores London Made in England” and is also stamped “Stelastic Reg’d Steel Texture Elastic Fitting” and is perforated with the original owner's initials. There is also a British hatters union label affixed under the sweatband (see last photo) and a printed insert under the sweatband concerning, I believer, this bowler hat. It should fit about a size 7 1/8 - the opening measures 22 1/4” around the sweatband and 6 1/2” by 7 7/8” across the opening. It has a few small problems - the grosgrain band around the crown is wrinkled on one side and the bow would need to be pressed flat, there are two wear spots to the grosgrain edge (see last close-up photo), the sweatband is detached at the join, and the top of the crown is a little wavy or indented. Otherwise, this bowler hat is in very good condition and with a bit of work would be great. The hat is difficult to date precisely, but I think that it dates to the 1940s or 50s.
This is a wonderful English bowler hat from a quality London hatter - despite the small problems, very natty!
